Because I'm going to need to remember these... here are 5 Tips for Taming Holiday Stress:
Trim the Fat
Eliminating unnecessary expenses not only feels amazing, but it also adds more room to your holiday budget for travel/fun/gifts/etc. Do you really need that Netflix streaming package? How attached are you to your Birchboxes? When you stop to think about all the little things you spend your money on sometimes you realize that less is more.
Get an Early Start on Gifts
Whether you're buying or making gifts for your loved ones, the best way to not stress about it is to get it all done as early as possible. I'll usually draw up a plan and budget for my gift-giving ahead of Thanksgiving and do as much shopping as I can ahead of December.
Do you have some massive driving time looming in your future? Planning on hosting a party and feeling overwhelmed by all the cooking you'll need to do? Just ask for help! Be flexible, and don't try to do everything. This year, our work schedules are really cramping our traveling so Matt's family will be joining us in Nashville for Thanksgiving and *mad bonus* they're going to help a ton with the cooking! Don't worry about breaking from tradition, it might be amazing to make your own!
It might seem like an obvious suggestion, but you'll be amazed by how quickly "go to the gym" gets scratched off your 'To Do' list when you get busy this time of year. Try participating in one of the many wonderful holiday-themed fitness challenges or integrating more activity into the things you do already. For example, I recently cancelled my $40/month parking permit at work and I'll be walking from now on. Staying fit, saving money, and it feels so good!
Treat Yo' self
In the the frenzy of the holidays, don't forget to set aside some time for yourself each week to do something that's just for you. Whether it's just going for a walk, getting your nails did or making a pit stop in your holiday shopping, you'll be happy you did!
